So long, swelling!
August 30, 2007

It can be hard to feel like a sexy mom-to-be when your ankles have disappeared or (even worse) turned into “kankles.” It is common to retain water during pregnancy because the weight of your baby is placing pressure on your veins resulting in less fluid being moved out of your lower body. Many women will feel swelling and tightness toward the end of the day, or after they have been standing for a long time.
Before you pack away your shorts or dresses, try these tips to say “so long” to swelling.
1. To help drain the fluid from your feet and legs, recline back in a chair with your legs propped up.
2. Wear full-length maternity support hose (not the short knee-highs) to aid circulation.
3. If you have been sitting or standing in place, try taking a short walk to boost circulation.
4. Buy shoes 1/2 size larger than normal to accommodate for some swelling.
Make sure you talk to your doctor about any swelling you are having, for this can be a symptom of a dangerous condition called preeclampsia. Click here for more information on preeclampsia.
Got something to say?
