Maternity style:Get out of your work clothes rut

September 27, 2008

Are you in a work clothes rut? Find out how to shake up your mom-to-be look so can go to work in style.

Stylish Gretta Monahan gives these tips to People magazine:

Be chic, not sloppy: Feel free to try the latest trends if your office encourages it. Just remember to wear pieces that fit well and flatter your body. It gives you a responsible air.”

Corporate doesn’t equal boring: Wearing a suit is a safet bet, but it’s much fresher to break it up occasionally. Pair a colored blazer with a black bottom for a more modern look. A bright or embellished shoe is another option.”

Sites like Ann Taylor Loft Maternity, A Pea in the Pod and Old Navy maternity all have a good selection of work essentials for the mom-to-be.

Pictured is the Burlap blazer jacket in green (on sale for $59.99) from A Pea in the Pod.

Naomi Watts belts her bump

September 27, 2008

Pregnant actress Naomi Watts looks stylish and cool as she runs errands with her son, Sasha. Watts is expecting her second with actor Liev Schriever this winter.

Watts was seen wearing this same dress early in her pregnant without a belt. Now that she is further along, she accessorizes with a rhinestone belt under her bump and pairs them with black strappy sandals.

Pregnancy Fashion tip: As your tummy gets bigger, it is flattering to wear dresses, tunics or tops that gently hug your bump so you look pregnant, not big. Belting your bump is one way to turn your dresses and tunic tops into a stylish 2nd/3rd trimester look.

Naomi’s belted look works with this dress, but click here to see when her belted look was a fashion flop.

Pregnant in plaid: How to wear this trendy print

September 27, 2008

Plaid is one of the top fall fashion trends for both the non-pregnant and the pregnant set. How do you wear this print so you look hip, and not like a hippo?

A plaid print always looks timeless when it is on a jacket. A swing jacket, like the Plaid Wooj Swing Jacket ($39.99) from Motherhood Maternity would be a great addition to your wardrobe.

A plaid dress, such as the plaid smocked dress from Motherhood Maternity, will keep you looking hip and fresh. “Try plaids in soft fabrics,” designer Diane von Furstenberg tells People magazine. “It’s the yin and yang — menswear translated to womenswear.”

Don’t restrict yourself to just jackets and dresses — update your look by incorporating plaid into your shoes or scarves. Make sure you are wearing one plaid piece at a time — this print worn head-to-toe is too much for a pregnant mama!

Pregnant Michelle Monaghan at movie premiere

September 27, 2008

Actress Michelle Monaghan showed off her bump in a figure-hugging blacked beaded dress at the premiere of her new movie, Eagle Eye.

Monaghan, 32, is expecting her first child in November. The actress was recently on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and said she and her hubby are not planning on finding out the sex of the baby. “Honestly, I think it’s saving us money because I’m not, like, buying things up a storm,” she told Ellen.

Ellen tried a couple of Old Wive’s tale tests to predict the gender of her baby. After doing things such as picking up a key and dangling a ring on a string over her belly, she determined she was having a boy! I guess time will tell if this one is correct.

Pregnant Gillian Anderson at London movie premiere

September 25, 2008

Actress Gillian Anderson, who is 8 months pregnant with her third child, made an appearance at the London premiere of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

Anderson wore a long striped Alice Temperley dress with a black short jacket. “I’m so close to popping out,” she joked with reporters at the premiere.

The X-Files actress gave the crowd a scare when she lost her balance, falling to the floor, as she threw a fake punch at the director, Robert Weise. Anderson was not injured during the fall, but many moms-to-be can attest to being a bit wobble once they can no longer see their feet!

Top 4 maternity fashion flops

September 24, 2008

When you are pregnant, you get lots of advice of what to wear, but knowing what NOT to wear is just as helpful.

Top 4 maternity fashion flops

1. Too tight clothes: Wearing your non-maternity jeans or tops when you have clearly out-grown them not only looks bad, but also feels just as bad! Stay stylish and comfortable by investing in maternity clothes, or non-maternity clothes that will fit a pregnant body, such as tunic tops or maxi dresses.

2. Too loose clothes: Wearing clothes that are too loose can be just as unflattering as wearing clothes too small. Look for tops and bottoms with details such as ties, buttons and shirring that adjusts as your belly grows. Clothes that are specifically “maternity” are great because they are designed to grow with you. Buying regular clothes in larger sizes (or wearing your hubby’s clothes) will often just make you look big, not pregnant.

3. Too much cleavage: If you haven’t noticed, one of the perks of pregnancy is a larger bustline. This can be too much of a good thing, however, so make sure your tops cover you enough that you don’t feel overexposed. Not sure if you are showing too much cleavage? If people are talking to your bustline and not your face, you may be showing too much.

4. Not enough cleavage: On the other hand, you don’t want to hide all your curves! Your man will love your new curves by wearing a flattering v-neck top that shows a hint of cleavage. Invest in a maternity bra that will support your fuller cup size.

Naomi Watts wears her summer shorts

September 24, 2008

Pregnant actress Naomi Watts got one last wear out of her summer shorts while out running errands last week. Watts, who is expecting her second child this fall, paired her elastic-waisted denim shorts with a striped long-sleeved cotton shirt and metallic ballet flats.

Copy her look by getting one last wear out of your maternity shorts and pairing them with this Bold-Stripe Top in pink stripe, on sale for $14.95 from Gap.com. This tunic-length top will keep your belly covered throughout your pregnancy.

These Suede Fringe Ballet Flats ($24.99) from Gap.com are the perfect mom-to-be shoe. They are stylish, comfortable and (the best perk) they don’t require you to bend over and attempt to tie a shoelace or fasten a buckle– just slip them on.

Amy Poehler at Emmy Awards

September 23, 2008

Even though Saturday Night Live actress Amy Poehler threatened to wear a “dress with a neon arrow that points up to the sky,” to the Emmy Awards, the comedian looked beautiful in a flowing, floral Zac Posen dress.

The Baby Mama star will be a baby mama for the first time next month.

Poehler talked about her Emmy style to USA Today: “I’m going to wear Zac Posen. I really like him. I love his stuff. And I’m using Harry Josh — he’s this star stylist and he does Gisele (Bündchen), and I’m going to ask him if he can make me look like Gisele from the neck up. I’m going to have a team of scientists and engineers who are going to hopefully try to draw the eye up. Will’s going to wear vertical stripes, with arrows that point up to the sky.”

The long, cream floral dress perfectly compliments her new curves. The details at the sleeves and bustline do a great job of drawing the eye up — as intended!

Brooke Mueller Sheen at Emmys

September 23, 2008

After undergoing emergency gallbladder surgery just over a week ago, a pregnant Brooke Mueller made an apperance at the Emmys with her husband, actor Charlie Sheen.

Mueller, 31, and Sheen are expecting their first child together this winter. Sheen is already a father to 3 girls — 2 with ex-wife Denise Richards, and 1 with ex-girlfriend Paula Profitt.

Mueller doesn’t seem to be showing much of a baby bump yet, wearing a long strapless metallic dress with a jeweled empire-waist. She accessorizes her look with a beaded clutch — which she is holding in this somewhat awkward position in every picture I have seen. I know she is trying to show off her clutch, but her pose would have looked a lot more relaxed with her arm down by her side. Besides the awkward pose, I think she looks great.
