Pregnancy pals: Melissa Joan Hart and Soleil Moon Frye

December 28, 2007

Actress Melissa Joan Hart (pictured) and actress Soleil Moon Frye are like two peas in a pod. They are both pregnant and due one day apart, they are both parents to 2-year-olds (Melissa has son Mason, and Soleil has daughter Poet), and they both are 31! The gestating duo recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about their pregnancies.

Soleil talks about how they both found out they were pregnant: “She[Melissa] told me she was pregnant and I was still trying to keep it a secret because I was so early on, and I just blurted it out and we are due like one day apart!

Even though Melissa is now happy to be pregnant, that was not always the case. “My first reaction was I cried for two days. I won’t get to snowboard this season, fight the weight thing again, and the indigestion. It [pregnancy] is not what I thought it would be.” She admits that she has felt such much better since getting past the first trimester. “The second trimester is so much easier.

Soleil agrees, saying “The fourth month you start feeling better. I love being pregnant.”

Lily Allen low-maintenance maternity style

December 28, 2007

lily-allen.jpg
British singer Lily Allen conceals her baby bump with a teddy bear as she participated in the Harrods Winter Sale in London this morning.

Allen, 22, said finding her look for 2008 will be easy. “Maternity dresses—big ones!” she told Usmagazine.com.

Allen says that being pregnant is “fantastic,” however she does not plan on raising her baby in the U.S, “Women there are too high maintenance!” she says.

“I remember getting a manicure in New York, and this lady who was having a forearm wax — which I’d never even heard of before! — looked at me and said, ‘You will need one soon. ‘I was like, ‘No! What are you talking about?’
They make you feel really bad about yourself unless you are completely pruned everywhere.”

She goes on to say,”I hate that modern way of thinking that you have to go to the gym 10 times a week, you can’t eat this, you can’t eat that, you should get a spray tan. All that preening makes you look worse anyway.”

What do you think? Does she have a point? Have we gotten to the point where we are too obsessed with our looks? I do feel like having children forces you to be less self-absorbed. I mean, who has time to get a manicure? I barely have time to brush my hair some mornings (thank goodness the wind-blown look is in!).

Party dress alternatives

December 27, 2007

black-silk-blouse.jpg
Dressing up for that upcoming New Year’s Eve party does not necessarily mean you are limited to wearing a dress. You have options, mama!

Depending on the fabrics and added details, you can find blouses and tunic tops that have just as much sex appeal as a flirty dress. Look for blouses made of fabrics that have a little dazzle, such as luxurious silk. Dressed-up details, such as bows and rhinestones, can give your blouse that festive touch.

Pair your blouse or tunic top with black pants or jeans, strappy heels (if you can stand it!), a trendy cuff bracelet and you are looking hot, mama!

gabby-reece-pregnancy.jpg
Volleyball player/model/author/TV sports commentator Gabrielle Reece is expecting her second child with husband Laird Hamilton early next year, and this busy mom recently opened up to Modern Mom about her favorite beauty products and splurges (yes, she eats chocolate!)

What products can Reece, 37, not live without? “Epicuren sunblock, Alafia African black soap for my face, 100% coconut oil for the skin on my body, mascara, and now that I have kids who fly with me often, I shamefully admit a portable DVD player.”

What do you do when you’re feeling selfish? “Sit on my butt with the clicker in my hand and a sample of good chocolate. Or, I go to get my nails done.”

What’s keeping you busy these days? “My four-year-old daughter, my website, workouts, fitness video projects, my husband, the household, writing for Yahoo!health and developing a TV show.”

Third trimester essentials

December 27, 2007

third-trimester.jpg
Congratulations on reaching your third trimester! Now that you are in the home stretch, here are some essentials to keep you looking great and feeling great!

Third Trimester Essentials

1. At least 2 tops that are long enough to completely cover you tummy and your backside when you bend over.

2. Underwear that fits your larger belly and leaves plenty of room for your growing hips. If you have marks on your skin when you take them off, it is time for some new panties.

3. Shoes that are 1/2 size larger to accommodate for swelling and the inevitable “spreading” of your feet due to loosened ligaments (thanks, pregnancy hormones!). Ballet flats are a comfortable and trendy option.

4. A casual and comfortable dress, such as a wrap dress or a jersey dress, will take you from the grocery store to the mall to a nice dinner with your hubby.

5. Boy, that belly is heavy! Try a belly support garment, such as the Sweetness Sash-Maternity Support ($57, pictured) for overall support and back pain relief.

What is your favorite 3rd Trimester must-have item?

December 26, 2007

kelley_heigl180.jpg
Between Halle Berry, Christina Aguilera and Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, 2007 has been a great year for pregnancy fashion style stars. What stylish star do I predict we will be following from Trimester 1 to Trimester 3 in 2008?

Here are 5 fabulous women I predict will be sporting a baby bump in 2008:

1. Katherine Heigl (pictured): The Grey’s Anatomy star just married musician Josh Kelley and she has been very vocal about wanting children.

2. Sarah Michelle Gellar: The Cruel Intentions star and her actor hubby Freddie Prinze Jr. have been married since 2002, so I am predicting they will be wanting to start a family soon.

3. Gwen Stefani: The No Doubt singer/fashion designer is great with little Kingston, and she and hubby Gavin Rossdale have said they want more children.

4. Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt has said that he and his gal Angelina want a huge brood of kids, so why wait?

5. Jennifer Aniston: I know, this one may be the wild card of the bunch, but I would love to see my favorite Friend pregnant!

Who do you predict will be pregnant in 2008?

Get a baby nursery like Brooke Burke

December 26, 2007

brooke-burke-nursery.jpg
Model/TV personality Brooke Burke, who is currently pregnant with her fourth child, gave some tips on nursery design on her blog.

She writes on her site, Babooshbaby.com:

Hi,
I wanted to share some info with anyone who is expecting. I worked with a nursery designer while I was pregnant with Rain. We pulled fabrics together, came up with a color scheme and we discussed all the necessities that a nursery should have. Designing a room can be overwhelming, and the pieces one might chose may not utilize space in the best way. I found that seeing an actual sketch was really helpful. I highly recommend using a designer and incorporating your own personal touch and desires. A lot of the work can be done via e-mail. I worked with Tori Swam from New Arrivals. Check out her website, www.newarrivalsinc.com, there you can see many of her celebrity nurseries, and some great pics of Rain’s own. She saved me so much time and stress. If it’s in your budget, do it. If not, it is still a great idea to research many different websites for inspiration. Get all the help you can get during your pregnancy. Here is a shot of Rain and I in her girly, pink nursery. Good luck - Brooke

You knew some of the perks of being pregnant—splurging without guilt, the “required” afternoon nap and always getting a seat on the Subway. Did you know that being pregnant has many fashion perks?

Top 5 pregnancy fashion perks

1. You are allowed to wear your Juicy velour track suit five days in a row because it is comfortable, cute and feels so good on your growing belly.

2. You enjoy wearing clothes, such as form-fitting tees, that highlight your belly instead of trying to disguise your midsection, like your pre-pregnant self would have done.

3. You are allowed to splurge on buying 3 pairs of metallic flats because your feet have gone up a size!

4. Thanks to your “pregnancy boobs,” you finally have a little bit of cleavage to show off.

5. With all your new curves, your favorite wrap dress has never looked better. Pictured is actress Marcia Cross wearing an Isabella Oliver wrap dress.
