Removing a stuck-on ring
August 31, 2007

It is one of those not-so-fun side effects of pregnancy: You wake up to find your fingers now resemble stuffed sausages and your rings are stuck on your fingers. Blame all the extra blood volume circulating through your pregnant body, the heat/humidity and that late-night plate of salty french fries, but your rings are not coming off. What do you do?
Try these tips for removing a ring:
1. Prop your hand up over your head (or above your heart) to decrease the swelling.
2. Dip your hand into ice water for a couple of minutes to quickly de-puff your fingers.
3. Twist your ring off, instead of pulling straight off.
4. Use petroleum jelly or soap and water to help your ring slide off.
5. Use Windex: I know it sounds crazy, but for some reason it works great.
If none of these tips are working and your finger is changing color, call your doctor. You may need to get your ring cut off. You can often get your ring repaired, but you can’t replace a finger!

Jaime Pressly talks weight gain and masks
August 30, 2007

My Name is Earl actress Jaime Pressly, now mom to 3-month-old Desi, speaks her mind on the “joys” of pregnancy.
On pregnancy weight gain:
“As a new mom I’m supposed to go on about how wonderful it was to be pregnant. Well, I don’t buy into that. The truth is that I love my baby to bits, but the rest of it sucked. Pregnancy was the biggest killer for me. I hated it - I hated being fat. My hormones were all over the place and I acted like some lunatic, picking fights with my boyfriend over how he made my coffee.”
On pregnancy symptoms, including the “pregnancy mask”:
“On top of that I had this hideous ‘pregnancy mask’ skin discoloration which completely covered my face. You can normally use creams to disguise it, but not when you’re pregnant, so I had to walk around looking like I was horribly disfigured. This may sound arrogant, but I’m used to looking hot. I just wanted to cry all the time.”

No “mom jeans” for Jaime!
“I’m having a party and then a holiday and I aim to be in a super-slutty outfit for the first and a swimsuit for the second. I love being a mother, but I want to be a super sexy mother with a better body than ever before. When I pull on my spray-on jeans for my party, I want to look in the mirror and like what I see.”
Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon: Steal her look
August 30, 2007

Actress Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon lit up the night at the InStyle annual summer party. The NYPD Blue star, due with twins later this year, nails the perfect casual/cool/sexy look.
Garcelle is wearing a paprika colored long puff sleeve tee ($100) from A Pea in the Pod. The side ruching ensures this top hugs your bump in all the right places. She pairs her colorful top with Mama J by J Brand maternity jeans ($210) also available from A Pea in the Pod. The ink wash gives a slimming effect, while the full length elastic side panel ensures long-term wear.
Complete this casual look with strappy sandals, hoop earrings and a flirty clutch.
Natural stretch mark remedy
August 30, 2007

It is always reassuring to know exactly what you are putting in your body and on your skin when pregnant. Mandarin oil is safe to use throughout your entire pregnancy, and helps to promote skin-cell regeneration making it your ally against stretch marks.
I love this simple and natural remedy (taken from Blossoming Beauty: Wellbeing and Looking Great during Pregnancy by Jo Glanville-Blackburn) to prevent stretch marks:
Blend together:
2 drops of mandarin oil
1 drop of lavender oil
10 ml (2 tsp) of grapeseed or sweet almond oil
Massage into your belly every night.
So long, swelling!
August 30, 2007

It can be hard to feel like a sexy mom-to-be when your ankles have disappeared or (even worse) turned into “kankles.” It is common to retain water during pregnancy because the weight of your baby is placing pressure on your veins resulting in less fluid being moved out of your lower body. Many women will feel swelling and tightness toward the end of the day, or after they have been standing for a long time.
Before you pack away your shorts or dresses, try these tips to say “so long” to swelling.
1. To help drain the fluid from your feet and legs, recline back in a chair with your legs propped up.
2. Wear full-length maternity support hose (not the short knee-highs) to aid circulation.
3. If you have been sitting or standing in place, try taking a short walk to boost circulation.
4. Buy shoes 1/2 size larger than normal to accommodate for some swelling.
Make sure you talk to your doctor about any swelling you are having, for this can be a symptom of a dangerous condition called preeclampsia. Click here for more information on preeclampsia.
A baby shower for Salma Hayek
August 29, 2007

Actress Salma Hayek, who is expecting her first child with fiancé Francois Henri-Pinault, had a baby shower at her house in Los Angeles last Saturday. Hayek, 41, has not said the sex of the baby or her specific due date, but her baby shower gifts do give us some pretty good clues.
US Weekly reveals that her gifts included Bloom Fresco high chairs ($400), Graco SnugRide car seats and the Petunia Pickle Bottom Cake Bags in Strawberry Lace($325) and Midnight Blackberry Cake ($325). Not only are the diaper bags cute, but suddenly I’m craving cake!
It looks like Hayek is expecting a girl…but I guess we will have to wait and see!
How modern moms battle morning sickness
August 29, 2007

“I’ve never felt so bad. I literally used to go green and have hot flashes. In fact a policeman said I might have had a heavy night when I was being sick in the street.”
British TV personality Myleene Klass
It is hard to feel like a stylish mama when you are battling with morning sickness. Luckily, most women find that the vomiting and queasiness will subside once you hit your second trimester.
Try these tips to ward off morning sickness:
1. Eat small and frequent meals throughout the day.
2. Try aromatherapy: Some women find the smell of lemon or ginger wards off nausea. Click here for more information on soothing scents for nausea and fatigue.
3. Acupressure: Simply wearing a seasickness wrist band can sometimes do the trick.
4. Avoid wearing heavy perfumes, or being around foods with strong aromas.
5. Rest: Fatigue can sometimes make the symptoms worse so try to rest when you can. It might be worth it to enlist help for cooking and cleaning during this time.

One top, two looks
August 29, 2007

I’m always looking for versatile maternity clothes, which is why I love tunic tops. When worn over jeans, they give you a stylish, casual look. Pair your tunic top with coordinating leggings and strappy sandals and you have a dressy look for a night out on the town.
When shopping for a tunic top, make sure it is long enough that you won’t feel overexposed in leggings. A good measuring point is a mid-thigh. I also like a tunic top with a belt or a tie-back that goes under your belly. This prevents the “tent look” and shows off your beautiful belly.
Look for light-weight fabrics that are easy-to-care-for (machine washable) with a fun, flirty print.
Pictured is the Vince Striped Tunic Tee available at A Pea in the Pod.
